Knitting: Pink Squares

The title of this series refers to the pink knitted “pussy hats” worn by millions of women protesting Donald Trump’s election as American president, and in response to his advice on how powerful men should treat women: “Grab ‘em by the pussy”. It’s also a nod to one of the iconic works of twentieth century avant-garde art, Malevich’s Black Square. The series pays homage to the work of Agnes Martin.

These drawings reprise my drawing series from 2005 entitled Everyday Gestures. In those drawings I employed the repetitive, mechanistic gesture used to create my photo transfer drawings.
