From its home of clay
2020-2023

Gathering
2022-23
46 ceramic dishware, wild clay and slip glaze, 2 cloth-covered tables
Through Summer 2020 to Fall 2023, working at Marcelle (Mad Mudslinger) Glock’s studio and with her guidance, I made the ceramic sculptures and dishware that comprise the central elements of this exhibition, From its home of clay. I shaped around rocks the wild clay sourced in the Thwi’kum area of Mudge Island where Marcelle’s studio is located, decorating the pieces with impressions of Garry oak leaves, with the thought of creating a collection of dishware to be used at an imagined gathering.

Wasters
2020-2022
9 ceramic sculptures, wild clay and commercial glaze, 1 cloth-covered table
As this project developed, in addition to the core work, Gathering, other related art works took form. Wasters is a series of nine small sculptures which were a result of my dissatisfaction with the early pieces I made.

Crossings
Crossings
2023
Video of approximately 6 minutes, looped
The video work, Crossings, evokes the many boat trips taken to Mudge Island to work in Marcelle’s studio and the return trips home to Gabriola at sunset.
Culls and Clinkers
2022
Bricks from Brickyard Beach, diameter approx. 1 m.
The sculpture Culls and Clinkers, composed of brick fragments collected from Gabriola’s Brickyard Beach, suggested itself when I noticed the similarity of the various colours of my clay pieces and the bricks and thought about the close proximity of those two sites of production.

The making of an artist’s book This Is Here, became a means to leave a trace of the project as process and to situate it in relation to some of the layered histories and knowledges that inform it.
